This year, I decided to take the boys to Detroit for Thanksgiving to see their uncle Quandre, who plays for the Detroit Lions. Detroit was not my first choice for Thanksgiving but I would do anything for my boys and that was an experience I knew they would never forget. We are a football family so Thanksgiving and football just made sense! I reached out to him about coming and he said he would love to have his nephews come to town. I kept it a secret for the boys for as long as I could. I ended up telling them on Monday night before we left where we were going and they were so excited.
After I separated with Quandre’s brother, we didn’t speak for a few years. Time sure does make a difference. It means a lot to be at a place in my life where I can call him. We may not be best friends, but to be at a point where we can hold conversations with each other tells me that we have all moved on. It’s crazy because I met Quentin when Quandre was just a little boy, I believe he was 4 or 5. Now, to see him as a grown man and uncle to my boys is just crazy.
We got there on Tuesday and stopped to eat at Mercury Burger & Bar! The food was great and so was the atmosphere, I highly recommend this place if you’re looking for a great burger. The boys waited for Quandre to get off and as soon as he walked in the door, they all ran up to him and gave him a huge hug. I sat there in awe because we have come so far. To be able to sit and chat with him is a testament of who we are and what really matters. We took the boys to the mall and ate at Benihana, one of their favorite places! They spent the night with their uncle and I had the night off! Win, Win for everyone!
My friend Gladys recommended a few places for me to visit while there. I went to Birmingham to Beauty RX for a facial and it was awesome! Birmingham is a cute city with lots of restaurants and boutiques. I went to a few of the shops and found some cute T-shirts for the boys and I to wear to the game. One of my favorite boutiques was Caruso Caruso! I walked around to some more shops and was surprised at how many organic juice places they had! Later, I headed to Salon RED to see Amelia, who came highly recommended and she gave me a great blowout!
We stayed downtown at the Westin and I took them to the ice-skating rink and we had a good time people watching! They have an area where you could buy smores and roast them on an open fire pit, as well as a Starbucks for some hot chocolate and goodies to enjoy while we watched the skaters.
Thanksgiving morning we woke up and went to cheer on the lions. Ford Field was not far from our hotel so the boys and I walked over. We sat with my friend Gladys who happens to have 3 boys also and we had an awesome time watching the game and kids play together. After the game, the boys wanted to hang with Quandre so they dropped me off at my hotel and went to have some “guy time”. I was happy to go back to my room and take a nap! I eventually woke up and went downstairs to have a quiet dinner at the bar. Gladys text me and she realized I was by myself and I said, “it’s ok, I enjoy alone time.” It’s very rare I get that so when I do, I enjoy it. Another quiet night, just what I needed!
